Wimbledon 2008

Yes it's here, it's the first day of the Wimbledon 2008, tennis championship.

Roger Federer was first out on the centre court early this afternoon, defending his title. He went through to the second round in straight sets beating his friend and old doubles partner, the Slovakian, Dominik Hrbaty.

I watched as Roger show his disappointment for not breaking serve to love. What this means, is that Roger obviously expects to win every point, even when his opponent is serving! On the other side of the court Dominik hit the ball into the net moments later in disappointment, when his serve was broken in the third set, seemingly consigning him to a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 defeat.

It made me think, how life lives up to our expectations whether those expectations are poor or wonderful. We are never beaten until we decide we are! I know Hrbaty was playing against the current champion and that it was unlikely that he would beat Federer; but the game of tennis like the game of life is played one stroke a a time, one point at a time and we owe it to ourselves to give ourselves the advantage of a possibilty of things going our way, even against the tide.

If Hrbaty had denied Federer his 60th straight win on grass today, I think Hrbaty would have been more surprised than anyone else! We all know that upsets occur in many sports, the results we expect don't always happen. If my observation was correct and Hrbaty accepted that he was going to loose, after loosing his serve in the third set, it serves (no tennis pun intended) to illustrate that whatever we do in life, we should never give up!
